Mr. Bluejeans

almost exactly one year ago, i inherited a few fish. mr. bluejeans, the betta; spike and phoebe, the oscars; and fred, the plecostomus. how did i end up as caretaker of these aquatic creatures? my mom’s best friend, brian, passed away. the betta was the first animal he’d gotten after getting out of the hospital. he’d had diabetes and kidney failure as a result of medication given to him while in the hospital. mr. blue was probably the most resilient fish i’ve ever seen. he’d reached a little over 2 years old, and was still fiesty, acting like a pirahna when you’d feed him, splaying his fins to an imaginary betta (he had a mirror near his tank). it’s really sad when an animal, like a fish, can upset me so much, but i don’t know. it’s just a fish, but it was mister bluejeans. he’d gotten sick, had ick in his tank and ended up with dropsy because of the ick, i’d suspect. he was just laying on the bottom of his tank (5 gallons) for the last couple of days. i’d treated him with maracyn in his tank, but it didn’t help at all. i increased the salinity of the tank just enough to reduce the swelling of his body. i was thinking he looked really awful when i left to take cadie home, and when i got back, he was dead.

poor little guy.
