i hate my job

mike said it best:
12:27 Elf: too bad it’s not a public institution where you can report gross incompetence.

as you may recall, i’m the “director of i.t.” for a credit info company. my job at any other organization would include managing tech solutions for everything from email to printing to network management and so on. unfortunately, at my company, i’m little more than a helpdesk technician anymore. the higher-ups at my company seem to think that there’s no reason to have backups for anything or to have competent hosting for our email or website, so we use an incompetent hosting provider: omnis. they host our email and our website for $6.95 a month. today, our email went down (this happens all the time). inbound mail was still being delivered, but outbound mail was being entered in a backlogged mail queue. support at omnis stated a 2-6 hour timeframe for delivery of mail and no ETA as to when it’d be corrected. totally unacceptable for a business. i’ve crusaded for getting a dedicated box somewhere or moving hosting to our nice underutilized IBM dual xeon box in our office for a long time..hell, i’d even be okay with moving our hosting to a provider that gives a shit. of course, the answer is always no. today just really reaffirmed my hatred for incompetence.

1. mail server stops delivering
2. i figure out it’s the outbound smtp server from our host (which i never use because it’s so unreliable)
3. i contact them and find out the queue is delayed 2-6 hours with no ETA of a fix

i contact my boss to get the information to at least move our scanner/fax machine to a separate mailserver so that we don’t have to manually fax everything

(11:53 AM) Me: omnis’ mailserver is borked
(11:54 AM) Me: outbound mail is being delayed 2-6 hours
(12:10 PM) Me: i set up a temporary account to allow outbound mail delivery while omnis gets their crap together..we just need to set up the fax machine so that we can send out faxes to everyone
(12:11 PM) Me: inbound mail is still working, but the outbound is affected.. if you want, i can give you the server info to temporarily change the fax server over until this stuff is cleared up
(12:17 PM) Boss: HI CHRIS I TALKED TO ****** AND SHE DOES NOT WANT TO SET UP AN TEMP E-MAIL….I JUST GOT BACK TO MY DESK SO LET ME READ THROUGH WHAT YOU WROTE
(12:17 PM) Chris: all inbound mail goes to the same place, we’d just need to change the outbound server on the fax machine so that faxes get delivered..today some time.
(12:24 PM) Boss: HEY CHRIS I THINK WE ARE GOING TO HOLD TIGHT FOR RIGHT NOW…DAVE CAN FAX EVERYTHING TO THEIR DIRECT FAX NUMBERS RATHER THAN SEND IT VIA SCANNER AND WE ARE GETTING INCOMING FAXES NO PROBLEM WE JUST CAN NOT SCAN THEM BACK BUT AS LONG AS WE CAN HARD COPY THEM VIA PHONE FAX WE ARE OKAY AND ALMOST ALL OF THE GIRLS HAVE FAX LINES AND FAX MACHINES
(12:24 PM) Me: but why make it more difficult, literally all you have to do is change the mail server and login info, the mail will still come to the same place but it will be delivered using a different server..
(12:25 PM) Boss: REGARDING THE OUTGOING E-MAILS WE WILL JUST LET CLIENTS KNOW THAT WE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH OUR E-MAIL AND THAT IF THEY ARE WAITING FOR AN E-MAIL IT WILL GO THROUGH ONCE THE SYSTEM HAS COME BACK UP….WE HAVE BEEN VERY SLOW SO IF ANYTHING TODAY WAS THE DAY THAT THIS SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED
(12:26) Boss sets her away status to: “Out of the office on errands”.

why do i still have this job again? instead of fixing the problem or even fucking bandaiding it, we revert to the 1980s and tell our clients that i’m a useless dickface. and it would be me looking like a useless dickface because everyone in the company knows it’s my job to make sure this stuff works– or it’s SUPPOSED to be my job.. right on. just another day at the fucking office.
