IMPROVEMENT.
i wasted around 12 hours on wednesday trying to get a little buffalo whr-hp-g54 wireless router running dd-wrt to cooperate with vlan routing between virtual interfaces. obviously, it ended up being a lost cause and bummed me out since i wasted almost a whole day messing with it.
fast forward to thursday: i realized i had an old motherboard and p3 733 in the closet (used to be my fileserver’s platform) and i had a spare enclosure (also from the fileserver) and a bunch of spare memory and nics. i bought a cheap antec earthwatts psu, got it friday. put 3 NICs (1 broadcom 570x and 2 3com 3c905s) in the machine, loaded pfsense 1.2 (which i used to use on an old k6-2 500 a couple years ago), fired it up and got the whole wireless thing working in 15 mins after booting. fucking retarded.
today, i decided i wanted to do more crap with my network, so i configured freeradius with EAP-TLS and enabled WPA2-enterprise on my primary wlan. mmmm…certificates… now, i just need to think of something else to do..
osx + g3 = sad
so, as i figured, OSX doesn’t run terribly well on an old g3. 10.3.9 felt really sluggish, input from the keyboard dragged ass a lot of the time, terminal.app doesn’t handle ANSI color correctly, etc etc. i ended up removing OSX and replaced it with a barebones ubuntu install with no GUI. i installed xorg, slim and fluxbox. i’m using eterm as the terminal emulator, epiphany (the precursor / less gay older brother of firefox) and elinks as browsers and a text-based IM client. so far, it’s been great. memory usage with fluxbox, epiphany and a few terminal windows running is around 200MB.

cadie and i ended our “vacation” on thursday and i went back to work. work is as boring as being at home. boo to that.
also, i didn’t realize that it was already the first week of october and that the balloon fiesta would be starting. this is awesome because the balloon fiesta is tits, but it also sucks because i work like.. a half mile from the balloon park. there are “NO PARKING” signs all the way up roy from 2nd st to the casino, but that’s not gonna stop people from parking and/or driving around to watch balloons. since i work nights, the mass ascention in the morning isn’t a big deal but the crowds that the balloon glows/special shapes rodeos draw are problematic. so i’m going to head into work early each night that there’s some late event so i dont have to spend an hour+ in my car trying to get to work (typically a 12 minute drive).
