uneventful

i’ve got nothing going on. my week was kind of weird because first, i had the plague and had to call in sick twice, so my week was truncated by a couple days. second, i had to come in to work at 0600 on monday and convinced my boss to let me stay for 8 hours instead of coming in, doing aerial lift training then going home only to come back at 1800 that day. so that was nice. i replaced the plugs in my car, which is running much better now. other than that, i’ve got nothin’.

something is wrong with me

i don’t know what’s gotten into me lately. i decided a couple weeks ago that i was sick of paying $120 a month for my blackberry. i loved the device, it’s a great, stable, awesome platform. unfortunately, i found myself realizing that i was barely using any of its functionality. i rarely used the GPS because bb maps and google maps are too slow over EDGE. i rarely used the browser because it choked on jscript or would randomly freeze during page loads. i religiously used push email. i didn’t really use any calendar features and i didn’t like how the more useful stuff was only available to people using BB enterprise server. After thinking about it for a bit, i embarked on a trip to the at&t store on 7 bar loop to take a look at what consumer wunder-devices were available, hoping i’d find something to replace my blackberry. i went to the store knowing i didn’t want an iphone. well, after dicking with all the devices in the store, i found the iphone was the most intuitive and had the most features that i wanted (including a push mail/calendar/contacts capability via mobileme) it also supported 3g data, which i’d missed since i got rid of my rizr (v3xx) in 2007. i bit the bullet and bought an 8gb iphone. since i bought it, i’ve found myself using many more of the functions day-to-day.

the second and third wtfs stem from my hatred for social networking. i don’t know why, but i suddenly was interested in updating my facebook account and using it. cadie had told me i needed a single presence online, and facebook was it. for the longest time, i didn’t really touch it. i would log in once a month or whatever and that was it. anyhow, i ended up using it much more often. i talked to a friend about the apps he has on his iphone and he’d mentioned tweetie, which uses the twitter API and runs on the iphone. twitter, i thought, is the most narcissistic of the social networking/web2.0 sites because it focuses on what “you” are doing. my logic was that no one gives a shit what anyone else is doing, let alone what i’m doing. anyway, i looked at a couple of twitter pages of people i know and people i don’t know and decided it wasn’t as bad as i’d originally thought. it’s sort of interesting, actually, to see what people do during the day. i guess that might be part of the allure. i dunno.

yeah, i think i’ve jumped the shark with a trifecta of web2.0 crap. what’s wrong with me?

booooooo

i was hoping i’d make it a year without getting sick (with a cold, or whatever anyway). right after i started @ sandia, i got a cold that lasted for around a month. last night, i went to work and felt fine and then suddenly ended up with this terrible sore throat that has carried on to today. i called in sick to work today so i don’t spread disease among my coworkers..although, that would be pretty amusing. at the same time, though, not amusing because my department is small enough that everyone would know it’s me.

best lead-in EVER?

without a doubt, this is the best first sentence in a news story i’ve read in a long time:

perfect

yum
