it’s fucking hot and how i’ve been ruining fond childhood memories
it seems like every year in NM when the temperatures start to rise, i think to myself that it’s happening earlier each year and it seems to be getting warmer each year. of course, this isn’t the case, it’s just my brain trying to play tricks on me. i think part of my problem with hot weather is that i hate it. i’d be totally happy with 30 degree temperatures year-round. hot weather does absolutely nothing for me. it’s hot, it’s uncomfortable, it’s..hot. it makes it nearly unbearable to spend any time in my computer room between the hours of 14:00-19:00 (when the sun finally gets behind the building to our west..yes, our apartment is on the west side of our building. yes, it sucks.)
i’m already feeling this way and it’s only the second week of may. i shudder to think of how i’m gonna feel in 2 months when summer is in full-swing and temperatures are in the high-90s to low 100s . yuck.
also, lately, i’ve been ruining fond childhood and early adolescent memories by revisiting movies and music that i liked at those stages of my life. i’ve ruined numerous action/martial arts films i watched with my dad over the years by revisiting them, recalling how awesome they were. unfortunately, it’s not the case and most of them are terrible. today, i ruined best of the best 2, the sequel to..best of the best. it stars brothers simon and phillip rhee and stupid eric roberts. they go to vegas to avenge the death of their friend (played by chris penn) who is killed by some german monstrosity in an underground fight.
why would i have watched it to begin with? well, my dad had enrolled the three of us (him, sister, myself) in tae kwon do lessons and so we sort of developed a taste for bad martial arts movies. best of the best (1&2 both) featured lots of tae kwon do and hap ki do stuff, so it made me feel special to watch it. or something. i happened to see it on today, so i figured i’d watch it. horrible mistake. as is the case with lots of other movies i’ve re-watched (con air, face/off, etc) it sucked. it’s an awful movie. it ruined another fond memory i had of a movie i loved as a kid.
my friend john and i talked about this earlier this week. he told me he’d watched mortal kombat recently and also told me how horrible it is. at the first mention of the title, my mind immediately went back to how much i liked it as a kid and how much i liked a lot of songs on the soundtrack (as a matter of fact, a bunch of the songs turned me on to artists i still like today..type o negative, napalm death & fear factory) and i was immediately filled with a desire to watch it again. it’s like some sort of disease, trying to destroy my childhood after-the-fact by pointing out what a tasteless idiot i was.
behold! the ghettotenna mk2!
i decided i wanted a better antenna for my bct15, so i bought a radioshack 70-176 multi-band discone antenna, some zip ties and 10 feet of 1″ pvc pipe. i cut 3′ of pipe off, assembled the antenna and stuck it on the end of the pipe, which i then zip-tied to a desk. it’s so ghetto, it’s awesome and its reception is much improved over the previous ghettotenna (mk1) which was constructed out of a radioshack vhf dipole (rabbit-ears) with a 75ohm balun with an f->bnc adapter on it, connected via rg6.
