argh, bad luck

i purchased 2 high-efficiency opteron cpus to lower the power requirements of my file server and speed it up a bit. unfortunately, arima, in their infinite knowledge, permanently installed the HSF brackets. when i was installing the new cpus, a brass threaded insert broke off inside the hsf mount’s standoff and i couldn’t get it out. so i ended up having to buy another motherboard, identical to the one i fucked up. at any rate, i managed to get a new board for $30 off ebay and it’s working now. i also snagged a nice promise sx4000 hardware raid controller and set up a couple raid-1 arrays for documents and music so that i don’t have to worry as much about disk failures. read/write speeds on the raid card are very decent, and the software provided by the manufacturer is handy and allows synchronization, building, removing arrays from the OS without needing to use the controller’s BIOS.
